Today Melanie and I played a little “game” on the drive. We took turns listing things we have learned, observed, or noticed. Here is a (very quick and abbreviated) recap of that conversation…
On things golf…
sbj: I’ve learned how to hit a (fairly) reliable draw. The first non “I just want it to go straight” shot in my tool chest.
mj: The 90 degree rule, and other forms of cart and golf course respect.
sbj: Three hour rounds are fast, but not *THAT* fast. We were played through on the 6th hole during a round we played in 2:50.
mj: Three hour rounds are fast! Going into this I thought 6 minutes per hole was completely reasonable, now I realize 10 minutes is absolutely rushing… and that’s with a one player “group.”
sbj: Carts can be very valuable on this type of trip (I wanted to walk every course, but on many of them walking and brisk play are mutually exclusive realities).
mj: Carts can take longer than walking (at least when cart-path only or 90 degree rules are in effect)
sbj: I have become a 5 iron punch shot aficionado, it has become my “get out of jail free” shot.
mj: People at golf courses are really nice!
sbj: It doesn’t matter if you are playing at a walk-on muni or a private country club, some folks just can’t be bothered with fixing their ball marks or raking the bunker after themselves. (grumpy Soren is grumpy!)
mj: It is super-important to have the “hats” (head covers) on the clubs (the clubs that are entitled to have “hats,” that is)
On things non-golf…
mj: Many places look very similar, driving through Florida could be driving through Oregon. The homogeny that exists between so many towns can be disorienting.
sbj: Postcards are hard to find if you are not right at a border, one clerk we asked had no idea what they even were.
mj: Wind-bursts exist (and are not windshield friendly)!
sbj: “Southern hospitality” is not a wives tale.
mj: Texas long horn cows are like a moose (soooo big)!
sbj: Choco-taco’s are the universal constant in truck stop ice cream dispensers.
mj: Skies seem bluer in the more southern states.
sbj: Recording a radio show isn’t as intimidating as I thought it would be, and actually was pretty fun.
mj: What happens in Vegas stays in New Mexico (because there is a Las Vegas in New Mexico… who knew?).
We’ll do more of these throughout the trip, just to switch things up a little bit 🙂
Cheers,
Melanie and Soren
These updates are fantastic. Keep them coming! 🙂
