Course Introduction – Deerfield Golf Club

There’s history, and then there’s history. Deerfield Golf Club in Delaware has it. Originally founded as a private course for the employees of the DuPont Corporation (that’s the same DuPont as “DuPont Circle” in DC, if you are curious) the historic grounds were acquired by the state in 2005, and opened to the public for the first time in 2006.

One of the things I have talked a lot about in my introductions is elevation change… I’m a big fan. One of the things I kept reading about when it came to Deerfield was the challenging fairways and hilly elevation changes, color me interested! The tree lined course was selected as Delaware’s best public course in 2016, and it’s not tough to see why, especially after watching the video of the property.

Deerfield is also experimenting with interesting methods of managing speed of play in including what they call “No More Than Four” rounds (meaning a golfer plays all 18 holes in 3 hours and 59 minutes) to go along with time more conventional (and leisurely) rounds that can take up to 4.5 hours. I like this commitment to valuing a golfers time.
