I got out for the first time (other than the range) Thursday evening after work. I was only able to get in 9 holes, and the 10th green was literally a sheet of ice, so I really only played 8+ holes, but it was still great to get back out on the course.
Recently I purchased a new 2-3 Hybrid wood (Cobra F7) which had worked pretty well at the range. But that is often different than hitting from a tee box, so I was excited to see how it would do. On the par 5 10th it allowed me to drive beyond the large patch of snow covering most of the right had side of the fairway… so… good start there!
As you can see by the frozen pond, winter conditions persisted; however, for the most part the course was free of snow and ice after #10 and since the sun was shining it was a “warm” 46 degrees. Really a beautiful day for winter golf (I like it a bit cold, so this was perfectly fine for me). Kudos to the crew at Eagle Hills, the course was really in great condition considering we have inched of snow on the ground just over a week ago.
The shot of the day for me came on the par four 8th, where my errant approach left me with this to get up and down for par…
I was able to lob the ball down to about 8 inches and tap in. I used the momentum from that to assault the par five 18th, driving my tee shot directly into the ground… good for about 120 yards of frozen-ground-assisted roll. “Ol Mo” can be a fickle mistress. Even so, two great fairway irons got me on the green with my fourth legit chance for a first birdie of the year (top left is what was left on 18)… birdie count for 2017 stands at zero…
So it goes 🙂 Had a enjoyable round with no blow up holes (only one double) and carded a 42. More than acceptable for the first time out (and who knows, if that 10th hadn’t been ice, maybe I would have had a bird after-all).
