As their website points out, frequently in this country, we consider our animals “disposable” when they get beyond a certain age or level of productivity. I’ve never liked this notion (or approach) so I was encouraged and delighted when I was introduced to Kindred Spirits, an eldercare/hospice sanctuary for animals and our charity spotlight for New Mexico.
Through the center as well as community outreach educational programs, Kindred Spirits is working “to create positive changes in attitude and behavior towards older animals by example.” They also provide workshops on how to care for “senior” companion animals in support of their goal of “provide[ing] education and support to empower people to care for their elderly animal companions at home.”
I really love the educational aspect of this program. There is a very finite number of animals that can be helped at a center, but the scope of assistance that can be found via education is – ultimately – limitless.
Kindred Spirits takes donations, and is always looking for volunteers. However, if you wanted to help you can also simply pass through their page on the way to Amazon to make your online purchases. They participate in the AmazonSmile program, and whenever you purchase via their link, Amazon donates toward their cause. This is a great way for people who may not have a lot of spare money to make a financial difference to an organization they would like to support.
