People that know us, know of our passion for reading and the importance we put on it (our kids probably knew it a bit more than they wanted to when they were young). I don’t know if I can identify anything that I personally believe leads to happiness and success in life more than literacy and the empowerment that acquired knowledge provides. Not just the accumulation of information, but the ability to reason and apply logic to problems, enabling people to suss out solutions that might not otherwise be obvious.
For our Louisiana charity, I’m keeping it pretty straight forward. It will probably be a shorter piece as there isn’t a lot to say, but sometimes – as they say – less is more… and this is important. We are featuring the Louisiana Reading Association (LRA), and specifically their Support a Flooded School program.
From the RLA about page:
The Louisiana Reading Association is one of the state associations of the International Literacy Association (ILA), the largest association of subject-matter specialists in the world. LRA and ILA promote and support reading research, reading development, and advancement of literacy statewide, nationwide, and worldwide.
The RLA has as it’s mission improving the quality of literacy for all, and part of that process is their Support a Flooded School program. At this web page, there are instruction on the ways you can “help in making the academic world right again for our teacher and librarian members” … AKA give (Fairways and Freeways has chosen option #2).
I think this is a great (and straight forward, which I really like) project and I really hope some of you will support it (I really do take this reading stuff seriously).
You can find out more about them, and the Flooded School program on their web site.
