For years I have heard people say the best golf swing consists of “taking a practice swing, and just letting the ball get in the way.” Until the last two days, I had a hard time making sense of that comment. I’ve taken a lot of practice swings, they are always free and easy. I’ve taken a lot of golf swings on the course, they are almost never so easy, even when I’m focused on trying to do just that. Even on the range, when there is no pressure and I have – at times – found a really nice rhythm, I’ve never felt the same as I do during a practice swing.
Until yesterday, that is. For whatever reason, yesterday something clicked and I truly was just setting up, taking a swing and coincidentally hitting a ball in the process. It was a great feeling. I’m certain Melanie got tired of hearing me say “I can’t believe how easy this is right now.” Heck, I was a little tired of hearing it; but, it’s kind of how people react to something that is difficult to believe I guess.
I, of course, have no idea how long this will last. I had two holes of questionable play this morning until I realized I was turning my top had over a bit too much; so, clearly, this can come and go at will. However, after 26 rounds of golf (over 27 days), it does appear I may have turned a little bit of a corner with my game which is exciting.
I was quoted in the Sun as saying I want to get my handicap into single digits, and I certainly would. However, what is far more attractive to me at this point is keeping that “easy” feeling with my swing. If I can just walk up to a ball and hit it comfortably going forward, I will be a very happy golfer. And, from a golf perspective, this trip will have been a smashing success!
