They say everything is bigger in Texas… buuuuut…
Alaska is it’s own special beast on this trip and has required some special considerations. One (actually several) of those factors led to a second round at the Creek Course at Moose Run (lucky me!). Lets take a quick gander at some of the “hardware:”
- #1 in Alaska, Golf Digest’s “Best in State” (2015)
- Among the “Top Ten” courses in the Armed Forces, Links Magazine (2011)
- #2 in Alaska, Golf Week’s “Best Courses You Can Play” (2016)
- #49 in the United States, Golf Digest “America’s 50 Toughest Golf Courses” (2007)
- #10 in the World, Travel and Leisure Magazine’s “Top Military Golf Courses” (2006)
- Golf Digest’s “Best New Courses in America” (2001)
No big deal.
To give you a real idea of how beautiful and challenging this course is, I really need you to watch this video (about the time the hole dogleg’s left and you see what you might guess is the green, protected by a river behind it… just wait, because that is the layup area, and that river is in play)…
The par 5 eleventh hole plays to 640(!) yards, the 5th come complete with split fairways (which again, you need video to really appreciate, it’s below), and there’s a championship tee box on #6 so scenic that the course actually recommends you take time from your round and just go stand there and take a look before going back and hitting on the tee’s you’re actually playing.
Day 49 (and a half???) will be Alaska (again!) and it promises to be more than memorable!
