Course Introduction – Dubsdread at Cog Hill

Home of the BMW Championship (formerly the Western Open) for 20 years Cog Hill’s Dubsdread course needs little to no introduction to avid golfers, or even many casual fans. Some of us may even remember watching Tiger Woods set the course record of 9 under in 2009 (one of his five championships on this course).

In addition to being on just about every “top courses you can play” list; though, what tickles the spine of most serious golfers (and me 😉 ) is the challenge the course represents. Rated in “America’s 75 Toughest Courses” by Golf Digest, and cited similarly in several other pieces, Dubsdread – simply put – will test your game. A “Dub” is a poor golfer, and the name “Dubsdread” came from just that… a (not so?) gentle message to golfers… beware!

While your neighborhood muni may set up the 18th hole as a “bring ’em back” hole, as you can see from the picture above, Dubsdread is a pure championship course, challenging players to the very end. Not all “dread” though, the layout is fantastic; as exemplified here by The 16th, which is on Golf magazines 500 most Beautiful holes list…

A couple of the distinctive traits of the course are tight landing areas and heavily bunkered greens, you can see these concepts illustrated here on the par 4 eighth, even the relatively benign (at first glance) looking holes are well protected and meant to test your entire bag…

Day 37 is Illinois, a challenge I’ll be up for and looking forward to!
