Usually, when a course has been rated by Golfweek magazine the number 1 course in a particular state for 8 years running, the big news to share is about the actual course. However, while Mount Washington is a great course (and we’ll get into that a little bit later), sometimes history take a front seat. In July of 1944 a monetary conference held at this property accomplished the following:
The conference established: the World Bank, set up to provide long-term
international funds, especially to underdeveloped countries; the International
Monetary Fund; the gold standard at $35 ounce; and tied the value of other
countries’ currencies to the U.S. dollar.
The history of the property goes on to comment that “It is said that the conference was more important than the Treaty of Versailles after WWI.”
In it’s 112th year the Donald Ross course is well worth the visit in and of itself. In addition to the awards mentioned above, they are Golf Advisor’s #5 course in New England and #5 nationwide for off-course amenities. The property also includes a 9 hole course that was built in the late 1800’s and predates the championship 18 hole track.
Every review I read spoke of the outstanding course conditions and fastidious work of the groundskeepers. Captivating views of both the historic hotel and the Presidential Mountain Range ensure that your sensory experience will excel as well. I doubt I’ll do anything as historically significant as setting the global gold standard (for anything, including golf)… but I’m certain day 31 in New Hampshire will be more than memorable.
