Course Introduction – Spirit Hollow Golf Course

One of the things I liked right away about Spirit Hollow was the fact that they had a page called the superintendent’s view that updates golfers about the activities and plans of the club, for example…

We have also built several bat houses that will be placed strategically around the golf course. It’s a known fact that a single little brown bat can eat up to 1000 mosquitoes in a single hour! Bon appétit our little bat friends!

… this is fantastic! (and not just for the mosquito abatement element of it) I think it’s really cool to see the course from the courses perspective, if that makes sense. Why they do the things they do etc.

But I digress, about the golf! Spirit Hollow is the #2 ranked course in Iowa, both by Golf Digest and Golf World so you know you are getting a great course from the start. The course goes 7550 from the tips, has water on 11 holes, “abundant” elevation changes and 15,000 trees lining the fairways.

I also like the history of a young man’s dream coming to fruition a little later in life (kind of reminds me of this trip of mine, actually). The description talks about him walking the property for years before building the course; mapping it all out in his mind. When you look at holes like #18 with it’s creek ambling through the par 5 fairway, you can imagine him thinking about this exact view…

Fun fact: the second place finisher in the Drive Chip & Putt competition (boys age 10-11), which was recently completed at Augusta, was from Burlington, home of Spirit Hollow! I’ll be in Iowa on day 38, one man living his younger self’s dream on another man’s younger self’s dream.
